Substance 3D Painter Tools – Metal Surface Kit (MultiNormal)

My new Metal Surface Kit for Substance 3D Painter .. a set of four customizable MultiNormal tools for adding metal texture, damage, deformation, and polishing detail directly inside Painter.

Each tool includes multiple pattern variations, adjustable sliders, and fast switching for efficient hard‑surface and environment workflows.
A short demo video is included to show the tools in action.

Automated photogrammetry rig I built for scanning metal samples - ultimately unsuccessful, as the surface details were too fine and the samples too reflective

I tried coating the metal samples with grey paint to reduce reflections for scanning, but the micro‑details were so small that the coating completely buried them - another failed approach.

Photometric stereo rig used to capture the micro‑surface detail of metal samples. This method worked reliably and produced excellent results.

Part of the research -this magnification shows the true scale of surface detail created by mechanical treatments. The sample is brushed metal viewed at x5 and x20 magnification.

Since I didn’t have the equipment or skills to apply professional mechanical surface treatments, I purchased certified samples and studied them under a microscope. Colored lighting helped reveal the form and micro‑detail more clearly.

While the tool includes some scan‑based elements, I ultimately used them mainly as reference and rebuilt the surfaces procedurally. This approach gives much more control and authoring flexibility. Here’s a shot of Polishing Tool source Designers graph.
